Romantic Things to Do in Zanzibar Beyond the Beach

Romantic things to do in Zanzibar beyond the beach: sunset sails, dinner at The Rock, Stone Town, sandbanks, spa time and more, with tips for couples.

Zanzibar’s beaches are the obvious draw for couples, but the island’s most memorable moments often happen away from the sun lounger: a sail at the end of the day, dinner on a rock in the ocean, a walk through Stone Town as the light fades. This guide brings together the most romantic things to do in Zanzibar beyond the beach, with practical tips on timing, tides and booking.

It’s written with input from the Guest Relations team at Bamboo Zanzibar, on the beach in Jambiani, on the island’s south-east coast.

A sail on a traditional dhow is one of Zanzibar’s classic experiences for couples.

1. Sail Into the Sunset

Few things on the island are as simple, or as memorable, as being on the water when the sun goes down. Traditional sailing boats, from wooden dhows to small ngalawa outriggers, still work along the coast, and a sunset sail lets you see it from the sea as the light softens.

Tip: on the east coast, trips are timed with the tide, so let your hotel plan the departure. At Bamboo, the Guest Relations team arranges sunset sailing and charges it to your room.

2. Watch the Sunset in Stone Town

Stone Town, the island’s historic centre and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is at its best in the late afternoon. Wander the narrow lanes, carved doors and rooftops, then head to the waterfront as the sun sets over the sea. In the evening, Forodhani Gardens fills with food stalls grilling seafood and Zanzibari snacks.

Tip: spend at least one night in Stone Town rather than visiting on a day trip, so you can enjoy it after the day visitors leave.

3. Dine at The Rock

The Rock is a restaurant on a coral outcrop just off the beach at Pingwe, on the Michamvi Peninsula, and one of Zanzibar’s most photographed places to eat. At low tide you wade across; at high tide a small boat takes you over.

Tip: reservations are required, and it’s popular, so book well ahead through the restaurant. From the south-east coast, the drive is usually under half an hour.

4. Have Dinner on the Beach

A private dinner on the sand, just the two of you, is a classic for a reason. At Bamboo, romantic beach dinners and the Signature Private BBQ are part of the restaurant’s culinary experiences, with menus built around seasonal and local produce.

Tip: private dinners and BBQs need to be booked at least 24 hours in advance, so plan yours early in the stay in case the weather changes.

5. Walk the Lagoon at Sunrise

On the east coast, the beach faces the sunrise. When low tide falls early in the morning, the lagoon becomes a wide, shallow landscape of sand, seagrass and tidal pools, and walking out together as the sky turns pink is one of the quietest, most beautiful moments the island offers.

Tip: wear reef shoes, never walk on coral, and turn back well before the tide returns. Our guide to Jambiani tides explains how to plan around the water.

6. Picnic on a Sandbank

Off the west coast, near Stone Town, small sandbanks appear and disappear with the tide. Boat trips take you out for a swim, snorkelling and lunch on a strip of white sand surrounded by turquoise water.

Tip: sandbank trips are tide-dependent and can get busy, so choose a smaller operator and go early.

7. Snorkel Together on the Reef

The reefs around Zanzibar are full of colour, and snorkelling side by side is an easy way to share something new. From the south-east coast, trips head out to the reef beyond the lagoon. Mnemba Atoll, off the north-east coast, is another well-known option, but it’s a longer day out.

Tip: pick operators who keep groups small, don’t anchor on coral and don’t chase marine life. If you want to see dolphins, avoid trips where many boats crowd around one pod.

8. Spend Time at the Spa

On a trip built around slowing down, a few hours at the spa can be the highlight. At Bamboo Elements, massages are inspired by the five elements, and bath rituals are designed to be slow and calming.

Tip: ask the team about booking your treatments at the same time, and leave the rest of the day free.

9. Explore a Spice Farm

Zanzibar is known as the Spice Island, and a visit to a spice farm is a sensory, gentle way to spend a morning together: cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla straight from the plant, often followed by a simple lunch.

Tip: many spice tours start near Stone Town, so they combine well with a night there.

10. Swim in Kuza Cave

In Jambiani, Kuza Cave is a limestone cave with a natural freshwater pool, run as a cultural centre. A swim in the cool, clear water, often with Swahili music and storytelling, is a calm contrast to the heat of the beach.

Tip: check opening times locally before you go.

11. See the Red Colobus Monkeys at Jozani Forest

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is Zanzibar’s only national park and the best place to see the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey. A guided walk through the forest and along the mangrove boardwalk takes a couple of hours and fits easily around a beach stay.

Tip: go in the morning, when it’s cooler and the monkeys are active.

12. Do Absolutely Nothing

The most romantic plan can be no plan at all. Keep at least one day free: a late breakfast, a swim when the tide comes in, a long lunch, a nap in the shade and dinner as the stars come out.

Tip: choose a room that makes doing nothing feel special. At Bamboo, the Villa in the Jungle has a 360-degree private plunge pool and jacuzzi, and the Ocean View Signature Rooms include floating breakfast in your own swim-up plunge pool. See the accommodation for details.

Planning Tips for Couples

  • Don’t overbook. Two or three outings in a week is plenty; leave space for rest.
  • Plan around the tide on the east coast, especially for swimming, walks and boat trips.
  • Book special moments early, such as private dinners, spa time and popular restaurants.
  • Group activities by area. Stone Town, spice farms and sandbanks sit on the west side; Jozani, The Rock and Kuza Cave are closer to the south-east coast.
  • Tell your hotel you’re celebrating. It helps the team plan the small details.
